MISL PLAYOFFS '08:
BLAST KNOCK IRONMEN
FROM THE POSTSEASON

Photograph by Dan Salvo, DazzlePhotography.com

Newark, N.J. (Saturday, April 12, 2008)- The effort of the New Jersey Ironmen was everything that Head Coach Omid Namazi could have asked, but it was not meant to be. After the Ironmen battled their way into a 4-4 stalemate in the closing minutes of the final frame, former MISL MVP Adauto Neto hit the game-winner to send the Baltimore Blast into a semifinal match-up with the second seeded Milwaukee Wave. The 6-4 loss brings an end to the inaugural season of the Ironmen who reached the postseason in just their first year.

Defenses prevailed in a scoreless first quarter, and the two clubs headed into the second period with a couple of zeros still on the scoreboard.

The first points of the game came at 5:46 of the second frame when Blast defender P.J. Wakefield scored a two-point shot, giving Baltimore a 2-0 edge. Baltimore midfielder Lucio Gonzaga scored an unassisted knock with 32 seconds left in the first half, and the Blast took the 4-0 lead into the locker rooms at intermission.

After no goals were tallied in the third stanza, New Jersey headed into the final 15 minutes of regulation still trailing, 4-0.

Forward Freddy Moojen got the Ironmen on the board at 5:36 of quarter number four when he finished a Shaun David assist, and Goran Vasic knotted the count at four each by putting an Omid Namazi ball in the upper left corner of the net at 6:05. With the intensity level on high, Neto scored the game-winner at 12:40 to send Baltimore into the next round of the postseason.

Former U.S. National Team goalkeeper Tony Meola played well in goal for the home team, registering eight saves in the hard-fought contest.

MISL PLAYOFFS '08:

IRONMEN DROP FIRST-EVER
PLAYOFF GAME AT BALTIMORE

Photograph by Dan Salvo, DazzlePhotography.com

Baltimore, Md. (Thursday, April 10, 2008)- The New Jersey Ironmen hit the road today for 1st Mariner Arena to play their first-ever postseason game, a quarterfinal match-up against the Baltimore Blast. Despite scoring the first goal of the contest, New Jersey would come out on the wrong end of a 22-10 decision. The series now heads to Prudential Center this Saturday when the Ironmen play host to the Blast at 7:00 p.m.

Defender Donny Gray netted the first playoff goal in New Jersey history when he scored a Nebo Stamenkovic ball at 13:03 of the opening stanza, but a deflected ball at 7:23 resulted in an own goal against the Ironmen. Baltimore forward Guiliano Celenza was credited with the three-pointer, and the Blast took a 3-2 lead. Baltimore defender P.J. Wakefield made it 6-2 when he scored a Adauto Neto pass from beyond the arc at 1:26.

Forward Freddy Moojen sent a pass off the wall to Tiguinho at 11:36 of the second frame, and the Brazilian forward finshed the ball to pull the Ironmen within a goal, 6-4. At 7:06 Stamenkovic centered a ball off the glass, and New Jersey midfielder Tim O'Neill put it in the back of the net to even the count at six each. The home team quickly reacquired the advantage 15 seconds later on a Celenza to Machel Millwood two-point tally, and Neto extended the gap to 10-6 in favor of the Blast at 4:09. The two clubs would inevitably take that count into the locker rooms at halftime.

The lone goal of the third quarter came off the foot of Baltimore defender Mike Lookingland who finished a Millwood assist at 3:35 to give the Blast a 12-6 lead.

At 2:06 of the fourth period, a Robbie Aristodemo to Denison Cabral two-pointer stretched the Baltimore advantage to 14-6, and the Ironmen would suffer an onslaught of goals to finish the game. New Jersey defender Gordon Kljestan and O' Neill netted the final goals for their team on unassisted scores.

The two clubs now head back to Newark to close out the series this Saturday at Prudential Center. Should the game tally be tied at one each following the second game, an immediate "mini-game" golden goal (first to score wins) will be played for the right to advance to the semifinals.

NEWARK, N.J. (Monday, April 7, 2008)-
The New Jersey Ironmen formally announce today that they will host the Baltimore Blast at Prudential Center this Saturday, April 12, in game two of their opening round series in the 2008 MISL playoffs. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.

“The intensity and excitement is at a different level for a playoff game,” New Jersey Head Coach Omid Namazi stated about the postseason. “Hopefully, the players will feel that excitement and raise their game to a new level.”

The Ironmen will travel to Baltimore this Thursday for the 7:05 p.m. series opener of their quarterfinal match up. If the series is tied at a game each after the first two contests, a third “mini-game” with a golden goal will be played immediately following the second game. The team that nets the golden goal will advance to the semifinals. If New Jersey is able to win the series, they would face the Detroit Ignition in the second round.

The Blast took the regular season series over the Ironmen, 3-1, and Coach Namazi reflected back on those earlier meetings as a blueprint for his postseason preparations.

“We have to see where we were able to have success against them and try to focus on emulating those aspects of the game,” Coach Namazi commented. “After looking at those different things, we can determine how we can achieve the most success.”

The Blast finished the season as the third seed, and New Jersey enters the postseason as the sixth seed. In other playoff action, fourth-seeded La Raza de Monterrey squares off against the fifth-ranked Chicago Storm. The top-ranked Ignition and second-seeded Milwaukee Wave received first round byes. The MISL semifinal round commences next weekend, and the one-game championship will be played Saturday, April 26, at U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee.

Tickets for the first-ever Ironmen home playoff game this Saturday are available now. Call 1-800-IRONMEN today to reserve your place in team history!
